At the conference we ask attendees to list questions they had for the speakers. Following are the replies.

AFAC Board

  • Animal welfare should be included on the Alberta government sponsored Environmental Farm Plans in detail. On farm handling, transport and facilities maintenance is essential to the focus of the EFPs. Reply

Dr. Webster

  1. How do Canadian animal welfare practices/codes/standards etc. compare to those of China and India? Reply
  2. Is there a hierarchy of animal species that fall along a “spectrum” between emotion and cognitive response. Reply

Dr. Whiting

  1. With reference to your criteria of verification (sustainable etc.) of legislation, is there: a) a way to test whether a law is effective, b) can laws be ‘piloted’ in a temporary manner? Reply
  2. I have heard about the legislation changes in animal low going to parliament on raising the current maximum penalty for animal abuse cases. How do you feel this will affect animal abuse or is the legislation to remove animals from the property section a better choice? Reply

  • Could you please provide statistical information or charts to demonstrate the number of plants audited, the outcomes and improvements/changes? Reply

Dr. Grandin

  1. Besides training with yourself and available university courses, are there any good auditing training courses to train inspectors or food safety auditors to audit humane handling and animal welfare? Many of the speakers today spoke about the value of plants receiving animal welfare audits, but no one spoke about where one can be trained to audit. Reply
  2. You seem to suggest that the policy makers have less and less idea about the real world. Does that mean that we sometimes set unrealistic animal welfare standards? Reply

D. Murphy

  1. Are European people as disconnected from agriculture as we are in North America, and if so, how does the EU do the research and form the regulations for animal welfare that we do not? Reply
  2. I would like to take an opportunity to spread the word in a positive manner. I am speaking to the Canadian National Ag Awareness Conference in August. I would like permission to utilize the messages that you have professed, and take it to a wider audience of Ag Educators in Canada. May I use your notes as a basis for one of my speeches? Reply
